5 MAGICAL MOMENTS FROM THE WIZARD OF OZ THAT STILL GIVE ME GOOSEBUMPS!

"If I ever go looking for my heart's desire again, I won't look any further than my own back yard. Because if it isn't there, I never really lost it, to begin with.”
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum

The Wizard of Oz is a cinematic legend. The heart-warming music, vivid colours, singular characters, dazzling special effects and costumes are etched in my memory. These had such a deep impact on me, that even now, I can live it frame by frame.
As a child, I often imagined walking down the Yellow Brick Road, accompanied by the Scarecrow and Cowardly Lion. Who can forget the screeching Wicked Witch of the West? And undoubtedly, the thing that I coveted the most were the sparkling Ruby Slippers!

With ‘Dorothy & the Wizard of Oz’ coming to POGO starting 29th July, weekends at 12:00pm,I am excited to relive the magic of this timeless classic through the animated series. Speaking of which, let me take you through my top 5 favourite moments that fascinate me even now:

When the colour lights up the screen:

I am filled with a sense of awe and wonder, whenever I see the magical land of Oz come onto the screen, quite like when I saw it for the first time. As a kid, the idea of stepping into a magical world fascinated me tremendously, and thanks to Technicolor technology it was possible to experience this!

At the sight of flying monkeys:

The flying monkeys were most cringe-worthy creatures. The winged monsters terrified me so much, that I would run and hide behind my cupboard. As a kid, I would imagine them fighting under the dark skies ripping off the stuffing out of Scarecrow, which alone was enough to give me the shivers.

When the trees start flinging apples at Dorothy:

Courtesy talking trees in the Emerald city, I became very cautious of the trees as a kid! I almost dunked at every blow that was aimed at poor Dorothy. It was a scene with great comic timing and imagination, but definitely changed the way I viewed trees!

When the real wizard is revealed:

Dorothy and her friends are disappointed when they realise that the Wizard is far from noble. So, righteous Dorothy taps the hero in her, takes it upon herself to lead her friends and sets out to accomplish the tasks she was given. This is when I learnt that sometimes, the hero we seek in others is actually within us.

When Dorothy sees her family again:

Eventually, I will always relate to Dorothy. When she comes back home and realises that it is the only place with unconditional love and comfort, and the least of troubles. At the end, we all relate to this quote– There is No Place Like Home!

We’ve read the story. We’ve heard all the songs. We all know the road is yellow and who waits at the other end. But the legacy of Oz continues as it allows us to tap into the depths of a world that we all yearn to explore.
