How To Take Care Of Skin During Summers

Summer is a time that brings with it many skin care concerns. Acne, rashes, tanning, lacklustre skin are just a few of them. And the reasons for these issues range from environmental factors such as harsh sun, hot winds to even physiological factors such as lack of hydration, eating too much junk food and not keeping the skin clean. But if you want to really glow in the summers, there are easy steps to incorporate in your lifestyle and skincare regime.

Lifestyle changes For Proper Skin Care

How you live reflects on how you look. If you want your skin to look clean and radiant, your lifestyle and eating habits should reflect that. Here are some skin care rules to follow to maintain optimum skin health in the summer months:

  1. Make friends with water

Higher temperatures and more time outdoors leads to internal dehydration, which not only causes dizziness and headaches but also makes your skin look lacklustre and dehydrated. Drink at least ten 8-ounce glasses of plain, filtered water every day to help maintain critical moisture balance of the body and skin, and assist in detoxification.  If you drink caffeinated beverages, you must triple the amount of water you drink!

  1. Do not sleep with makeup on

This is a cardinal rule during summers, and not following it leads to product build up on the skin that ultimately causes acne, pimples, blemishes and pigmentation. If you have applied any makeup, before you sleep in the night, remove it with a makeup remover first. Then use a mild cleanser with lukewarm water to wash it off. Do not rub vigorously as you would be scraping off the skin of its protective layer.

3. Moisturize

Most people don’t realize the importance of regularly moisturizing the skin – even in summers. The drier your skin is, the more susceptible it will be to damage from environmental pollution and sun rays. If your skin is oily, you can use a medicated sun screen instead. A gel-based sun screen in ideal but you may need to apply it several times in a day. Those with normal or dry skin must use a moisturizer and after five minutes, apply sunscreen.

4. Don’t use harsh face washes or scrubs

Use a gentle cleanser to cleanse your body and face. A gel-based cleanser or a shower gel is ideal because it is gentle on the skin but don’t rub it hard – this will cause trauma to the epidermal layer.

  1. Maintain a night-time skin care routine

A pre-bedtime skin care regime is in any case important, but it becomes even more critical in summers to prevent tanning and ageing. After washing your face or taking a bath in the night, apply a Vitamin -C based repair cream or serum to nourish your skin. If you use facial oils, it is even better.

  1. Professional treatments

There are several skin clarifying treatments that also help in maintaining skin health in summers. A clean-up facial along with the clarifying facial will make you good as new. A few other treatments are:

Organic peels

that tap into the goodness of naturally occurring skin-friendly nutrients are really good. Vitamin C peel to get the glow back, mango pulp peel to exfoliate gently and papaya and pumpkin peels to cleanse and nourish are great. But make sure you get these done under the supervision of a qualified dermatologist.

Carbon Peel

is a popular treatment in the West and because it gives instant glow to the skin, it is ideal to take this treatment once in 40 days in the summers. In this treatment, which is a specialised dermatological procedure, carbon is applied to the skin. After that, gentle laser is applied, which bursts these carbon particles, gently peeling the skin’s outermost layer. This not only removes pigmentation and blemishes, but also bleaches the fine hair to reveal glowing skin instantly. But since this is a specialised medical facial treatment, make sure it is administered by a qualified dermatologist. Do follow it up after two months for the maximum benefits.

Armed with this knowledge, you can make the most of the summer season. Here is to skin care and health!

  3. Hi Aesha,

Excellent tips for summer skin care. We are all so focused on winter and spring skin care that we tend to forget that summertime is also an important season with its own “dangers” for the skin.

I just love the “Do not sleep with makeup on”, we never say it enough.

    Thank you,

  4. I knew about water and make up but didn’t know that you should moisturize even in the summers.. I thought with so much heat, what’s the use of applying creams and lotions. Good to know these tips Aesha.

    1. Thanks Anshu.
Yes we tend to ignore that but since the past one month , I am regularly following a night care routine where I use rose water for toning and then massage my face with serum and apply a moisturising night cream. My skin feels so good in the morning. So if you don’t like to moisturise in the day time due to heat then you should follow a night care routine
