How to Write a Winning Grad School Application Essay (That Can Get You Into Top Colleges!)

Let’s be honest — writing your grad school application essay can feel overwhelming. You’re staring at a blank screen, thinking: What do they want to hear? How do I fit everything into a limited word count?

As someone who’s spent countless hours (and late nights!) helping students shape their stories, I get it.

This year alone, I’ve edited over 45 essay type questions— yes, 45! — and I’ve had the joy of seeing students make it to Cornell, LSE and many more top universities. And behind each of those admits was an essay that worked. Not because it was perfect from the start — but because it was real, thoughtful, and deeply personal.

Here’s what I’ve learned from helping students craft essays that stand out:

1. Start with your story — not a template

I’ve had students text me at midnight saying, “I have an idea, but I don’t know if it’s good enough.”
Spoiler alert: It usually is.
The best essays come from moments of clarity, reflection, or even doubt. Whether it’s a side project, a family experience, or a shift in perspective — if it’s real and important to you, it’s worth exploring.

 2. Make it connect

Don’t just list achievements — explain why they mattered and how they led you to your goals. I always tell students: draw a line from your past to your future. Show how this program fits into your larger vision.

3. Keep your voice

The strongest essays sound like conversations, not textbooks. I’ve helped students preserve their natural tone — while still making the essay sharp, focused, and university-ready. You don’t need to sound fancy — you need to sound clear.

 4. Edit like it’s a team sport

One of my students said, “Ma’am, you’ve spent more time reading my grad school essay than I’ve spent writing it.”
And honestly? That’s how it should be. We go through multiple drafts — tweaking lines, reworking intros, and sometimes rewriting entire sections. Strong essays don’t just happen — they evolve.

5. Start now (because the deadlines sneak up fast)

Many top schools have already opened applications for Fall 2026. If you’re aiming high, don’t leave your essay for last-minute panic. The earlier we start, the stronger we can make it — without sacrificing sleep or quality.
