Pre-teen parenting is complex.
Mishti is just few months away from turning 10 and I was struggling with her mood swings, physical changes and behavioural complexities.
But I have cracked the code to deal with this as of now.
I follow a simple mantra.
🔹Honesty.
My communication with Mishti is always honest, open and continuous. I honestly share what will be accepted and which demands or behaviour is totally unacceptable. I am firm but open to discussion. Nowadays there are many other factors which positively and negatively influence a young adult. It is important that the child knows what is expected in terms of behaviour because during pre-teen and teenage years there are going to be many arguments.
Their behaviour could be influenced by their peers or if they feel pressurised by them. We need to build an environment at home wherein they aren’t scared to share their views and opinions. They should know that they will be listened to, but they should also know that it is not necessary that every opinion or demand will be validated.
🔹Sharing my pre-teen stories.
Whenever I face a situation wherein my daughter becomes stubborn or adamant, I share my own personal stories. I talk about all the mistakes I made during my pre teen years. I tell her that these are my mistakes, after I grew up, I felt I should have done things differently. I should have listened to my parents opinions. Today I regret. But those mistakes have taught me something. I am sharing these with you. You will make mistakes too and learn from them but learn from mine too.
I honestly share my weaknesses with her. That way she knows she can share everything with me. She knows I will understand because I went through the same. And that makes our bond stronger.
Do you feel these parenting mantras would be effective for you as well? Do share your thoughts in comments. Also, do share your parenting mantras.

I was mesmerised by the beauty. I wanted to come back Year after year. I had not imagined that in a month’s time how the situation at this Paradise will change.
Until now I refrained from speaking on social media about the terrorist attacks. But I couldn’t help myself from posting about it today.
Since I visited during winters everyone from the taxi driver , the locals , the hotel staff, tourist guides asked us to visit again during summers. They were so looking forward to the spring & summer season so there would be more tourists who would visit them. Their livelihoods depend on tourists.
I am deeply saddened by the situation at Kashmir today.
I just hope that it changes soon for the sake of the peace loving & warm people of Kashmir.

I have my weak moments too. I feel lonely and grab a chocolate. Sometimes I need a tub of ice cream and I feel better after eating.
Sugar has that effect on your brain.
I read in an article recently published in a newspaper that eating sugar and fat release opioids ( this works like morphine) in our brains similar to active ingredients present in certain addictive substances .
After reading this I felt the need to just not only focus on my physical fitness but mental fitness as well. I should not be losing control.
Few things that I attempted to not resort to food in weak moments.
1. Accepting unhappy moments: We need to embrace all the negative and sad moments. We should accept that life will throw challenges and embrace them rather than looking for comfort from food to avoid unhappy feelings.
2. Not focusing on body weight: We should not focus too much on weight and appearance. Don’t be obsessed to be thin. Thin is not always healthy. constantly thinking about weight affects mental fitness. It lowers your self esteem. Self-acceptance is the key.
3. Dealing with stress: After a hectic day or a stressful day most of the times, food gives comfort. Of course one needs to eat and I don’t mean giving up on food but following a regular meal schedule helps to beat stress. Eating at regular intervals and in right portion reduces chances of emotional eating.
4. Sleep: Most of the times, we ignore the importance of sleep in our weight loss routine. However I think a restful sleep of at Least 6 hours upto 8 hours is required for your body and mind to recover. Listening to soothing music or reading a book before bedtime surely improves your mental well being.
I hope this works for you as well. We will be sharing more such fitness stories and experiences.

Do I have muscles like a man?
When people watch my insta stories and posts lifting weights, I am asked many questions. Some out of concern and some out of lack of information.
Most common ones are : Why do I need to lift weights when I have a lean body?
Won’t I develop muscles like a man?
Today I intend to address one of the biggest myths when it comes to strength training.
But firstly let us understand what is strength training.
Strength training helps to increase strength within your body. Through strength training you train your muscles to be strong without adding mass. Strength training does not increase your size.
Once a woman hits 30’s , the lean body mass lessens. So strength training is required. It also reduces the risks of developing Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
Now coming to the misconception
MYTH: WEIGHT LIFTING WILL MAKE YOU BULKY
Fact : You don't have enough testosterone to build big muscles
Females have considerably less testosterone than males and because of this, it also affects the amount of muscle they are able to gain.
A complete body weight training module designed by an expert if done regularly is an effective way to shun off the fat that is covering the muscle.
Also every person has different requirement in terms of the amount of weights to be lifted. Here an expert supervision is important.
Regular monitoring of body weight, body mass, body fat etc is required. Also regular medical examination to check deficiencies in body is required before starting weight training.
It is not necessary to lift external weights , there are many strength training exercises which can be done using your own body weight and about which we will be discussing in our Pyjama mamma posts .
So be rest assured and if you are wanting to lift weights just go for it.
Because apart from all the physical benefits, strength training also makes you self confident.
